Week 5

This is my first time blogging and its quiet a new experience.

At the start of the term I had fallen behind within this course and am slowly trying to catch up without success it feels like some times. As in week 4 I had just completed week 3's reading and quizz and then moved onto Introduction to digital pedagogies and then the videos didnt work so i was unable to move forward until now.

I would find that within the children these days being up to date with all the lastest gagets, blogging would be a great way to stay in touch. However as I am doing my BML in Early Childhood, I am unsure as to how my little munchkins would be able to blog when they would just be learning the basics. I do believe that blogging would be an excellent way to keep in touch with the parents, so they are able to know what is going on within the schoolling lives of their children.

  1. Hi Lauren,
There are some smart young children out there, but I have to agree that blogs would probably be unsuitable for very young children. However my young grandson started prep this year and is already a wizz using the mouse. There is so much great educational software available for young children. The company Edmark have an early learning series and a couple of my grandson's favourites are Sammy's Science House and Millie's Math House.

Good luck with your course. I hope you can catch up soon.

  2. Hi Lauren. I started much the same way as you have and using this week to catch up. Yes, I agree that blogs may pose a challenge for early childhood however I love challenges like this.

I have have thought of one idea that may have some potential. What if the blogs and wikis wére used more as a visual tool to link their family and school friends and interests. Instead, use less text and more pictorials/video as the primary content. I'll try this with my nearly four year old. Cheers.

  3. These comments are great.
    Thanks for the ideas.
As I have worked in child care centres for nilly 4 years completing the various study and watching the children grow and develop, I was placed in the toddlers age group (15months - 21/2years) so I am still in the mindset of programming really young activities. This is why I was so unsure about how the children would use it and went with the parent idea.
I know there are great computer games out there that young children can use, however this (being an online journal) would be used better for the parents to keep in touch.
Then with further thinking it would be a great way to post homework for the children on a blog page which you could use a Voki to tell them what they need to do, this would not only engage the children in there homework but the parents as well, as they would need to be around to work the web pages and or links. This idea may even help some families who struggle with the idea of homework and getting there children to do it.
